Bad marriage forced me into bankruptcy. I am out of it now and am desperate to rebuild my credit rating.?

My ex was irresponsible. Had an affair and left me with $70K in joint debts and 3 children I chose to pay off the joint debts to protect my credit rating but after a few years it became impossible and I applied for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy ended in Oct 2008. I now wish to rebuild my credit rating and dont know how and am too afraid to approach banks for a small credit card. Any suggestions?

You should wait until January of 2011. If you’re employed at least 18 to 24 months and have $500 in a savings account, perhaps you can get a secured credit card. Most banks should be able to set it up for you. Make sure they belong to the credit bureau.

    It hasn’t been long enough since the bankruptcy for much to help unfortunately, but you can always request a secured credit card from your financial institution, or get a secured loan to set up a new payment history being reported. Of course, always pay on time, every time. It will take quite a while to recover from this unfortunately.

    Unfortunately you are probably going to have to apply for a secured credit card to start rebuilding your credit. Make sure it reports to the credit bureaus.
