You can get free credit reports directly from any of the three credit reporting agencies, Experian, Transunion, or Equifax (do a Google search) — it's the law. However, you typically have to request in writing and the report will be sent by mail.
If you want a faster, online report, you'll have to pay with a credit card. Equifax.com and MyFICO.com offer this service. Make sure you get reports from all three agencies because there can be differences.
Another point: Although you can get your credit HISTORY report free as described above, you cannot get your credit SCORE for free. For your score, you'll have to pay.
