what do police officers do for identity theft?

What can a police officer do for identity theft? Is there a protocol for it?

Well identity theft is a FEDERAL crime so the only thing the police will do is make an arrest. after that the person who commited the crime will belong to the FEDS.

If you mean if you've become a victim of identity theft then yes, they will follow a protocol, they assess who serious it is, what details may have been compromised and then contact the relevant banks and financial institutions that deal with your financial information
