Nellie McKay – Identity Theft

Saturday

“Identity Theft” by Nellie McKay from her CD Obligatory Villagers. One of the best songs, albums and artists you’ve never heard of.

Nellie holds all copyrights – I’m just helping her and Vanguard expose this great talent.

    I wasn’t referring …
I wasn’t referring to Prairie Home Companion. The PHC performance was terrific (and superior to the album) because she had a world class band behind her. But in most of her concerts she performs alone. On many of her songs this works better than the recordings, but I think this song in particular is better with the full orchestration. It’s a matter of taste.

    Thats the point!!! …
Thats the point!!! A live performance encompasses so many small attributes. It has the mastery of melody with many small changes, ad-libes and improvisations. When she does a live show w/ a band the musicianship and composition is already there but the musicians personalities portray. I just think this song is better live. The album (which I bought and love) version just sounds to generic for me. That Prarie Home performance is a perfect example.

    While I agree with …
While I agree with that on some of Nellie’s songs, I have to go against you on this one. The musicianship and arrangements on this album are so exquisite that they can’t be duplicated in a live performance, particularly with just Nellie on the piano. It is a totally different experience.

Oh, yeah – some of the best stuff out there you can catch on PHC. I loved “Bramble and the Rose,” GK sang it with AS in November 2008 – the 15th, I think, if you want to catch it on the archive.

I haven’t been able to get the lyrics out of my head since I first heard it a month ago. And I try to catch Prairie Home Companion more now just to see if I can “discover” another gem like Nellie.
