How can I find out if there is a credit reporting problem?

Friday

The husband wanted to know about his credit and I did a request at equifax. It came back saying that he opened a mortgage in March 2006. We have never owned a home. Equifax would not display his credit report and we encountered the same problems with the other two credit reporting agencies. Also, one of them had us go through a series of names and phone numbers that we had never seen before. Has someone stolen his ID?

If you couldn’t access his credit report, you don’t yet know that it says anything of that kind. The websites use security questions like that to prevent unauthorized access. If he can’t access his credit reports on line, he can request mailed copies via phone or by mailing in the request form. See here: http://www.annualcreditreport.com

While identity theft is certainly possible, another possibility is that the credit bureaus have confused your husband with another person with the same name.
