How are credit reporting agencies legal?

If they are private companies and for profit – how are they allowed to have our private information – keep a file on us – then turn around and charge us to see it?
I know we get one free credit report a year – but lets just say I start a file on you. Only let you see it once a year unless you pay me. This has your social security number and address in it AND affects your life in a major way. It could keep you from getting jobs and housing. How is that legal?
It's not. So go ahead and have them charged. I just want to watch and see how far you get.

It's legal because there's no law that says it isn't.
People have very strange ideas about what legal rights they have to keep their own information private.
If you tell me your name, address and SS# then, unless you give it to me under circumstances where I have a contractual obligation to keep it private, I'm free to tell it to someone else.

I think when you want credit from them, they put on the contract that they can report your personal info to the major credit bureaus and this benefit them because they are all creditors and want to know about us ie:who we are when we apply for credit and how likely we are to pay them back etc. I assume since you are asking them for money, if you don't sign their contract, u don't get the money. Its very important to read contracts as they vary and you can even put your conditions as well. Welcome to corporate USA.

Why isn't it legal?
Anyone can maintain whatever information they want, and show it to whoever they want. As long I obtain information about you legally, I can do what I want with it.
