Problems with council tax bill – could it affect credit rating?
I moved into a brand new property a few months ago. Because it was brand new it hadn't yet been allocated a council tax band. A couple of months in, I received notification of my council tax band but no bill.
A month or so later I received a bill, which I paid online and also enquired via email whether there was another outstanding amount as I felt there should have been. They said that there was, and that they would send me a reminder so I could pay.
This never came, and a couple of weeks later I received a court summons asking me to pay the bill and an additional £45.00 court fees. Angry with this, I called to find out what could be done – I paid the bill and £45.00 court fees to halt proceedings and am now working to claim those charges back as I feel they are unfair.
Then, yesterday I received the original reminder dated 26.10.07, but delivered at the end of July.
I don't feel this is my fault, but could the court summons affect my credit rating and if so what can i do?
Ta
yes it could affect your credit rating but you can contact Equifax or Experian and get a copy of your credit file. You have the right to correct mistakes on this and if creditors are looking for information on you in the future it will be noted on your file.

i would think it may effect your rating, but I would advise you to see your Citizens Advice Bureau. They may contact the council on your behalf.
They were very good with me when my partner left without paying years worth of council tax.

It sounds as though the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing at your council offices. Only a County Court judgement, however, would affect your credit rating; the issue of a liability order at the Magistrates Court does not. (Use first link below for more info). Although unlikely to be your council, the second site is also worth a visit. (Or perhaps your own council has a similar website).
