Does this affect my credit rating at all?

Debit cards work just fine, and have the same protection as credit cards when it comes to fraud. Check out the Visa Debit Card policy.

I try to stay away from credit if at all possible.

    yes. open a prepaid visa or master card. it can only be used by what is available on it, and it increases your credit score….

    As long as you don't already have several cards that are maxed out, it will actually help your credit score by doing what you are talking about.
