Will start out in the negatives if I have no credit and get a credit check?

Monday

I am 19 and I want to move into an apartment but they require a credit check. I don’t think I have credit because I’ve never had to pay bills or had a credit card. I’ve had a checking and savings account for a couple years. What will happen to my credit if the do a credit check, and will they let me move in?

Hey, Big Step moving off on your own. Good work asking for advice. You can never be too careful.

What you potential landlord is looking for is bad credit. If you don’t have any bad debts or a history of unpaid/late bills, then you should be okay. It won’t affect your credit really either, unless you’re having multiple credit checks in a short period of time.

The scale does not actually go below zero, so your score can never be less than zero. However, if you have a credit check done and you have a credit score within the next year, then it will be lower than if you had not had the credit check done, until one year after the credit check. After one year after the credit check, your score will be the same as it would have been without the credit check.
