How do you get a credit and background check on a potential roommate?

Thursday

My husband and I plan to rent out our extra bedroom in our condo and want to do a background check and credit check on the person we want to move in (when we find him/her). Do anyone know where to get this done or how much it cost?

For free, check out http://www.crimcheck.com , they have an extensive free public records section. Good for the DIY'ers.

But since you would have to do the research yourself which can lead to missing out on information, I would recommend http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com , they offer statewide background checks for $20. They also offer nationwide background checks for $30

You can do this through the 3 major credit bureaus. Get the potential roommate's consent and release so you can order the reports or have them order the reports and have them mailed directly to you.

Look up: Transunion; Experian and Equifax.

I am not sure about credit checks but you can request that this potential renter get a background check. I don't know what state you're in, but I am in SC and when I got my apartment I had to go down to the Police Dep. and pay $6.00 for a background check. There are always those things you pay $20-$40 bucks for online… but I don't know how reliable they are.

Well you can get a police check through your local police station. Depends on the branch as to how much it costs but around here its 40-60 dollars. As for a credit check, that's a little harder to get. I would just note that they need these two things to apply and let them worry about it themselves. If they pass you're take it off their first month's rent. (or however you want to do it). Credit checks will depend on so many variables though for cost. Talk to your bank about the best way to go about it.

Look in the Yellow Pages. As long as you have a release from the applicant (have him pay the fee) it'll be easy. Get a criminal check, as well.

You will need a signed release for the credit report and then you can pick one of the many types of background checks available here: http://www.efindoutthetruth.com/preemploymentscreening.htm

There is no way to obtain a credit report unless you have an account setup with the reporting agencies. That being said you can always check thier background through your county/state court records.

These records are often online for free. Check with your county/state to find out if they have a records site. If they don't you can just ask the court clerk to give you this information over the phone. The records are public and you shouldn't have any problems obtaining them.

The courthouse will have civil, criminal and small claims information concerning your prospective renter. With this information you should be able to determine if the renter is a deadbeat or not.
