More and more businesses are using credit checks as part of pre-employment screenings. They may do this under the law as you are potentially entering into a business relationship with them. It is not just banks who do this. Manufacturing job screens typically involve credit checks. In fact, about the only places that don’t use them are places like Manpower and Kelly for temp placement and minimum wage jobs.

The reason they do this is two-fold. First, many places equate good credit with overall responsibility. My personal feeling is that this is unfortunate. Anyone can fall on hard times and those who are job hunting are generally doing so in order to meet their obligations. Second, it’s an employer’s market out there. With few jobs and millions seeking, employers can afford to hand pick their employees and are using credit scores to that end. It’s neither right nor fair, but it’s done. A person can have a FICO in the 800s and be a total waste of space, then the next person can have a FICO in the 500s and is a good person (and would probably be a good employee, if given the chance). When the self righteous s.o.b.s on Yahoo answers start bleating about all people with poor credit probably wanting to steal from a potential employer, I always refer to old Bernie Madoff. I bet he had a great credit rating.

IF you are hired at a place like a bank or anyplace that you handle money, if you have poor credit they feel you are at poor risk for handling "their" money. That is why they do the credit checks. I find it rather discriminatory too. But it's the law. I would look at other jobs. Walmart isn't the best place to work or retail either. LOL.

The problem is that not all creditors report to all three bureaus and not all lenders use the same report. Some information will show up on some reports and not others. Get all three FICO scores and credit reports — but make sure you don’t go to the individual credit bureaus to get your scores. They each use something called a credit score, but they use different formulas to achieve a number. What you need is a FICO score — which you can only get from the Fair Isaac Corporation, a company based in California. FICO, put simply, is a persons credit score.

I would recommend myfico.com. They have a free trial that you can do and then cancel before 30 days. They’re the only credit agency who use your actual fico score, which is used by most lenders. The other ones don’t give you, your actual fico score. Freecreditreport.com (the one that has commercial on tv), they use a system called a plus score. It’s not your actual credit score that lenders will be looking at. At any rate, I would do myfico and get data on your file from equifax, freecreditreport.com for experian, and the free anual credit once a year for transunion. There are services that do all three, but they cost money. I would do them individually ( the free trial), and then just cancel the trial so you wont be charged. All three have different information on you, so you want to make sure that you check all three. i have heard that citi credit bureau, had great credit reports. you should definetely consider checking them out.

ALL banks run credit reports for new employees. That is common sense in that industry....you should know that. No bank is going to hire ANYONE with money/credit issues. That is just begging for trouble!!

Companies subscribe to gain access to a program called "e-oscar" which gives access to make additions and changes to credit reports. Whether or not the original poster’s company could gain access to e-oscar is up to e-oscar.

Regardless, as a company trying to collect a debt from another company, I would contact a collection agency and have them pursue the debt(s) from the company.
